DO I HAVE TO TAKE PLACEMENT EXAMS?

UC Merced offers three online placement exams in math, chemistry, and computer science & engineering.

Placement exams are only offered in May.  You may take each exam once.

Fall 2020 admits must complete the placement exams before 4:00 pm on Mon. June 1.

Results from placement exams determine eligibility for certain classes in 2020-21.

If you miss or choose not to take the placement exams, you will automatically be placed in the preparatory class in that subject.

Placement exams are free.  There is no disadvantage to taking the placement exams.

If you take a placement exam and later receive AP or IB scores that place you into a more advanced class, you will be allowed to take the more advanced class.  (This is also true if you complete a transferable college course by Summer 2020 and submit the official transcript to UC Merced before fall semester begins.)

MATH PLACEMENT EXAM

To access the exam, see Step 9 on the Next Steps Checklist and this site.

WHEN WILL I REGISTER FOR FALL CLASSES?

Your assigned online registration time will be posted in your student portal under MyRegistration in early June.

As of 6/22/20:  Fall 2020 transfers register on Mon. July 27, 2020.

As of 6/22/20:  Fall 2020 first years register at randomly assigned times between Wed. July 29 - Fri. July 31, 2020.

Registration remains open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week after your assigned time.

If a desired course is closed when your register in July, check the open course list throughout summer.

You can continue to adjust your schedule throughout the summer.  Seats open when other students drop classes.

Fall 2020 admits are required to enroll in classes by no later than Mon. Aug. 3, 2020 as a condition of your admission to UC Merced.

HOW MANY UNITS SHOULD I TAKE IN MY FIRST SEMESTER?

Most classes at UC Merced are 4 units.

Enroll in 12 units or more at your assigned registration time between July 29-31 to have the best selection of courses and class times.

All students must enroll in 12 or more units to trigger full-time status.

Most students take 14-16 units each semester.

Students are allowed to enroll in a maximum of 18 units.

If you receive financial aid or other academic scholarships, it is very important to enroll in 12-16 units during your assigned registration time so the aid can be applied to your Fall 2020 bill before the fee payment deadline.
