Newly Admitted First Year Summer Opportunities

Just accepted your admission to UC Merced and want to get a head start on courses?

Newly admitted students for the upcoming Fall semester are welcome to enroll into summer courses at UC Merced prior to starting their first semester. There are three great opportunities for incoming first year students.

Summer Session

No College Credit will be earned and Free

College credits earn upon completion with passing grades, Summer Session Fee

College credits earn upon completion with passing grade, Summer Session Fee

Great for students who want a refresher for MATH, CHEM, and/or WRI

Great for students who need MATH for their major and are interested in building resilience, good academic skills, and a community

Great for students who are interested in getting a jump start to their academic journey

Students may repeat the placement exam associated with the subject completed

Course options: MATH course (MATH 005, MATH 011, or MATH 021) [based on major and placement], SPRK 010, and USTU 010. 7-units in total.

Open for students to choose based on their major and general education requirement

Fully online learning through modules

Students will live on campus for UC Merced’s Summer Session C (July – Early August) [date vary by year]

Course modality varies and may require students to live on campus depending on timing of course

You may enroll in one or more of the following subjects:

 

MATH

 

CHEMISTRY

 

WRITING

You may enroll in the following course options:

 

A MATH course (MATH 005, MATH 011, or MATH 021)

 

 SPRK 010

 

 USTU 010

You have the option of selecting any courses offered by UC Merced during the summer that you meet the prerequisites for.

For the MATH requirement, you will take a MATH course that fits your major and right for your MATH placement.

*It is generally recommended that first year admits take a maximum of 2 classes (usually 8-9 units) in summer.*

SCIENCE OR ENGINEERING MAJORS: College math class (college Precalculus, Calculus I, Calculus II) or college chemistry class great during summer.

A summer math class is especially important if you did not complete a full year of calculus in high school and plan to do a science or engineering major at UC Merced.
