Changing Major or Declaring Minor

DECLARING OR CHANGING YOUR MAJOR

All students must complete a major as part of the bachelor's degree.

You must declare your major before you reach 90 units.

FALL 2020 FIRST YEAR ADMITS

You will be able to declare or change your major after Fall 2020 grades have posted.

If you have completed at least one semester at UCM and have met the requirements for your intended School (see below), you can change your major by using the online Major Change Form.

Submit the Major Change Form in early January 2021 after fall grades have posted to have the change reflected on your record in Spring 2021.

  •      You must be in good academic standing after Fall 2020 to submit a Major Change Form.
  •      Submit a Major Change Form by no later than the week of January 11, 2021, to allow time for review by your intended School.
  •      Put a reminder in your phone or calendar to submit the Major Change Form by the week of January 11.
  •      The deadline to submit a Major Change Form after fall semester is usually in early February.

Talk with your Bobcat Advising Center during Fall 2020 if you are a new first year who would like to submit a change of major form after fall semester.

When you submit the Major Change Form, you will need to certify that you have already loaded a draft graduation plan on MyDegreePath for your intended major.

Connect with your Bobcat Advising Center advisor if you have questions as you begin to develop your plan.

The multiple major application requires a detailed graduation plan with specific courses planned for each semester.  The faculty in both majors will review your multiple major application.

You must be able to complete your double major within the time frame listed above for that School.  There are no additional semesters allowed to complete a double major.  Summers do not count against the maximum number of semesters allowed.

See the Catalog section on Multiple Majors for more information.

DECLARING A MINOR

A minor is not required at UC Merced but is a great option for students with multiple interests and abilities.

Minors are offered in some areas in which majors are not available.  See a complete list of minors here.

REQUIREMENTS TO DECLARE A MINOR

Fall 2020 first years can declare a minor after fall semester grades have posted in late December.

Undeclared students can declare a minor only after they have declared a major.

You must have a 2.00 cumulative GPA and be in good academic standing at UC Merced to declare a minor.

Students who choose to do a minor must declare the minor before reaching 90 total units.

In general, students are expected to complete one or more classes in the minor with a C or higher before declaring the minor.
