Changing Major or Declaring Minor

DECLARING OR CHANGING YOUR MAJOR

All students must complete a major as part of the bachelor's degree.

FALL 2020 FIRST YEAR ADMITS

First year admits are given one opportunity to change their major by a specified deadline.

See Step 9 on the Next Steps Checklist for the "confirm your major" button.

For Fall 2020 admits, the deadline to "confirm your major" is 4:00 pm PST on June 1.

Some majors may not be open for changes at this time.

If a major is not currently available, the next opportunity for Fall 2020 first years to declare or change their major will be after Fall 2020 grades have posted.

CURRENTLY ENROLLED 2019-20 STUDENTS

If you have completed at least one semester at UCM and have met the requirements for your intended School (see below), you can change your major by using the new online Major Change Form that launched on 4/21/20.

When you submit the new Major Change Form, you will need to certify that you have loaded a draft graduation plan on MyDegreePath for your intended major.  Meet with your Bobcat Advising Center advisor during your first year to begin to develop your plan.

DOUBLE MAJORS

First year students will be able to submit the paperwork to declare a double major during their second year (third semester) at UC Merced.  Talk with your Bobcat Advising Center advisor if you are considering a double major.

The application for the double major usually requires a detailed graduation plan with specific courses planned for each semester.  You must be able to complete your double major within the time frame listed above for that School.  There are no additional semesters allowed to complete a double major.  Summers do not count against the maximum number of semesters allowed.

See the Catalog section on Multiple Majors for more information.

DECLARING A MINOR

A minor is not required at UC Merced but is a great option for students with multiple interests and abilities.  Minors are offered in some areas in which majors are not available.  See a complete list of minors here.

Talk with your Bobcat Advising Center advisor if you are interested in submitting the Minor Change Form.  The Minor Change Form is currently a fillable PDF; submit it to your Bobcat Advising Center advisor.  The Minor Change Form is expected to become an electronic form in late Spring 2020.

If you are undeclared, note that you must declare a major before you can submit a Minor Change Form.
