BIO 011, 012, & PHYS 008, 009, 018, 019: How to Register (video)

All biological sciences (BIO) majors at UC Merced require the introductory two-semester lab biology sequence.

BIO classes may also be required for admission to many pre-health programs.

  • The BIO 011-012 series is the new introductory lab BIO series starting in Fall 2023.
  • BIO 011-012 replace the former BIO 001-002.

The introductory lab biology courses:

  • BIO 011:  Introduction to Molecular Biology and
  • BIO 011L:  Introduction to Molecular Biology Lab (must be taken together with BIO 011)

AND

  • BIO 012:  Introduction to Organismal Biology and
  • BIO 012L:  Introduction to Organismal Biology Lab (must be taken together with BIO 012)

Most science and engineering majors also require an introductory two-semester lab physics (PHYS) sequence at UC Merced.

  • There are two lab PHYS sequences.  Check the PHYS classes required for your major in the current Catalog.
    • Select Academic Programs in the left column.
    • Select your major to view major requirements.

The two introductory lab PHYS sequences:

  • PHYS 008:  Introductory Physics I for Physical Sciences
  • PHYS 008L:  Introductory Physics I for Physical Sciences Lab (must be taken together with PHYS 008)

AND

  • PHYS 009:  Introductory Physics II for Physical Sciences
  • PHYS 009L:  Introductory Physics II for Physical Sciences Lab (must be taken together with PHYS 009)

OR

  • PHYS 018:  Introductory Physics I for Biological Sciences
  • PHYS 018L:  Introductory Physics I for Biological Sciences Lab (must be taken together with PHYS 018)

AND

  • PHYS 019:  Introductory Physics II for Biological Sciences
  • PHYS 019L:  Introductory Physics II for Biological Sciences Lab (must be taken together with PHYS 019)
