The English Language Institute (ELI) serves both native English speakers and multilingual students who grew up speaking a non-English language. ELI services include:

Individual one-on-one consultations
- Individual appointment with ELI coordinator to review grammar, student's writing sample, academic English in the research university, and more

Grammar workshops
- Weekly 50-minute interactive workshops
- Topics include verb agreement, active/passive voice, sentence types, incorporating quotes in your writing, make your essay "flow", presenting ideas with varying vocabulary and structures, common errors to avoid, and more
- Drop in for one workshop or attend as many as you wish
- Schedule of topics posted each semester

Conversation Partner Program
- Free program that matches international students with members of the UC Merced community for conversation, optional informal social gatherings, and insight on American culture
- Students of all class years are welcome and encouraged to volunteer as a conversation partner
